For some decades now, the practice of forestry work along watercourses has progressively undergone major development in line with the changing uses of the surrounding countryside and the progress made in the examination of the functions and uses of river-bank tree vegetation. After a period during which river-bank tree vegetation was exclusively considered a nuisance during improvement works, its interest in improving the stability of river-banks and its scenic charm were subsequently recognized. However, the time factor necessary for such plant formations is still overlooked: their development is rarely taken into account. Various functional elements may be observed in the research being carried out at present, such as their role in the immediate conservation of nutrients and suspended matter originating from the drainage basin and in the dynamics of organic matter. However, the practical aspects regarding management and maintenance are still overlooked. There are gaps in the characterization and in the structural knowledge of riverbank tree vegetation, as well as in the impact assessment of forestry work which prevent implementation of environmentally-friendly management policies suitable to these forms of vegetation. The protocol of the practical examination presented here, together with various specific cases, was designed to describe as precisely as possible, the various parameters of those locations considered as representative. These parameters describe the state or workings of the elements of river-bank tree vegetation. An a priori restriction of this protocol was also to be seen in its relative simplicity and in the fact that results were obtained fairly rapidly. This is vital for regular practical use in the field. Various applications concerning different watercourses of south western France were discussed, together with the applicable management indications which were observed at the time of the study.
