Fourteen cultivars of gram (chickpea) (Cicer arietinum L.) were evaluated under rainfed conditions. The relationship of different characters with seed yield was determined. Seed yield had a high correlation with pods per plant and number of secondary branches. Pods per plant had highest direct positive effect on seed yield and also contributed significantly via secondary branches to increased yield. The characters, pods per plant and number of secondary branches per plant should be taken into consideration in breeding high-yielding gram varieties suitable for rainfed conditions.
