The quality of temperature and humidity conditions for spring barley grown in the most productive areas in Slovakia was studied during the period 1971-1991. The total heat characterized by the sum of temperatures from the seeding period to maturity was directly dependent on the altitude in the range between 1129-1650 deg C. Temperature security declines with increasing altitude. Humidity conditions are characterized by the irrigation coefficient. The driest regions is the lowland Podunajska Nizina (southern Slovakia) where water deficit during the spring barley vegetation period ranges between 70-90 mm. Using the isothermic method, Slovakia can be divided into 6 regions according to temperature requirements, and into 1-3 sub-regions according to humidity requirements of spring barley.
