Translocation of photosynthetic assimilates was studied in relation to productivity of three corn varieties. The distal parts of the fourth leaves were fed with 14CO2. C-14 essay showed relatively high translocation rate of Giza and Hagien varieties, in comparison with a lower rate detected in Balady. Autoradiography technique was carried out and the results confirmed those of C-14 assay. In a field experiment, the grain yield per feddan of the three corn varieties was estimated. The results were in accordance with the different measurements of translocation of assimilates, showing a high positive correlation. Hence, these measurements could give early prediction of the crop yield, when manifested at an early stage of the plant growth.
