Observations of seminal root system were carried out for selected maize hybrids of 3 categories of earlines (FAO less than 300, FAO less than 400, FAO less than 500). For germination, 120 seeds of each hybrid were used. Pre-germinated seeds (5 repetitions for 20 seeds) were placed in special germinators, where they grew for 10 days at a temperature of 22 plus minus 0.5 deg C. Shoots were illuminated for 16 hours daily with a light intensity of 10 000 lux. The experiment was repeated 3 times. Length, volume and root surface were determined after 10 days. Measured values were analysed statistically and the relationship between total root length and earline category respective to vegetative period length were calculated. The observed hybrids have 1-8 seminal adventitious roots. Most of the hybrids have 3-4 seminal roots. When the number of seminal roots was higher, the roots were shorter. There is a moderate relationship between length and root volume (r=0.465). Dependence between groups of seminal adventitious roots (1-8 MS) and vegetative period length of hybrid was not proved. Some of the earlier hybrids produced less seminal advetitious roots (groups 2-5 MS) compared to late hybrids (groups 2-6 MS). Hybrid TaA-Zp-159-1/80 (FAO less than 300) had the highest number on average of seminal adventitious roots (5.34) and hybrid TA-270 (FAO less than 250) had the lowest number (3.7).
