The objective of this work was to study the effects of animal type, breed or cross and age upon the carcass characteristics measured at the six national contents for finished steers ready for slaughter, made at the "Lo Valledor" slaughter plant in Santiago, Chile. 512 steer carcasses obtained between 1984 and 1988, were analyzed, considering 31 productive variables and the live animal value. Correlations among variables, regressions for the significant ones and significance tests for the above mentioned factors were established. It was found that the most affected variables by the studied factors were: internal and external subcutaneous fat thickness, subcutaneous fat average and the gross meaty index. Most of the variables presented a positive evolution during the time period studied. Correlations obtained are, in general, from medium to high, fat infiltration grain being the carcass variable that had the highest incidence on live animal value.
