Ispitivanje osobina hibrida izmedju lucerke Medicago sativa L. i Medicago falcata L.

Lukic D.
Medicago sativa varieties and M. falcata populations were crossed. It was concluded that the major obstacle for successful crossing of the two species is the difference in their chromosome number. M. sativa xx M. falcata crosses produced 0.5 to 11.1 pods; the number of seeds per pod ranged from 0.33 to 2.02; the percentage of fertilized embryos that produced normal seeds was 2.28 to 4.45. Backcrossing tended to increase the percentages of pods and seeds formed. The number of stems per plant, plant mass and height were most variable characters whereas the contents of crude proteins and cellulose and the percentage of foliage were least variable characters in the examined varieties, then in the populations, F1, and F2 crosses. The wide-sense heritability for plant height varied from 31.4 to 40.6%, for the number of stems per plant from 27.3 to 38.1%, for the ratio leaf to stem from 53.2 to 85.6%, for the yield of dry matter from 20.0 to 28.3%, for the content of crude proteins from 34.3 to 44.4%, and for the content of crude cellulose from 31.6 to 43.5%.
