Pot and field experiments were performed in Burkina Faso and Mali in 1987 and 1988 to evaluate the resistance of selected progenies and low-stimulant varieties of sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] to the parasitic weed Striga hermonthica (Del.) Benth. In pot experiments on selected lines from the ICRISAT sorghum improvement program for resistance to S. hermonthica, the line 86W764 supported a lower number and a latter emergence, flowering and dehiscence of capsules of S. hermonthica than most of the lines, including the reportedly resistant check Framida. No line exhibited a high degree of resistance to S. hermonthica attack. In pot experiments on varieties reported as low-stimulant for the germination of S. asiatica seed, the variety IS-7777 supported the lowest number, latest emergence, latest flowering and lowest mean height of S. hermonthica as compared to any of the other varieties. The varieties IS-14825, IS-6961, IS-7739 and IS-14928 also supported a late emergence and very low number of emerged S. hermonthica per pot. Two other low-stimulant varieties supported a significant lower number of emerged S. hermonthica than did the resistant check Framida. The yield potential of these varieties remained low in Striga free fields. IS-7777 exhibited an exceptionally high level of resistance that could be used in studies on the mechanisms and the genetics of sorghum resistance to S. hermonthica.
