A new cultivating rice seedling system of growing rice seedlings in droughty nursery and irrigating before transplanting was compared with that in wet or upland nurseries. The results showed that the new system had some better biological effects on rice seedlings, such as the root system was flourishing, the quantity of root was at least 23% more than that in other nurseries, the ratio of white root was over 75.7% and the number was 2.3 times as much as in others, the vigour of root was strong and its rate of new root was over 142.3%, the number of reviving root was 1.6 times as much as in others. In addition, the number of green leaves, the thickness and weight of leaves, the water content of excised leaves for 24 hrs. were all higher than in others. The content of dry matter in seedling was 1/3 higher than in others and the seedlings were very strong so no restarting growth period to be observed. As the drought resistance and the elasticity of seedling age were better, the yield reduced less in adverse conditions.
