Three isoenergetic diets containing 20 percent CP were fed to wethers, with a decreasing proportion of soluble carbohydrate in each diet. The decrease in dietary starch content was accompanied by changes in pyruvate kinase, fructose 1,6-diphosphatase, pyruvate carboxylase and cytosolic NAD/ NADH which were compatible with an increased capacity for hepatic gluconeogenesis.
