Practical implications of growth biotechnology on the efficiency of lean tissue deposition by livestock.
1993
Steele Norman C.
This summary has reviewed literature regarding the practical application of two major technologies, somatotropin and beta-adrenergic agonists, which could profoundly influence the efficiency of lean tissue deposition by livestock. The majority of research has been conducted with somatotropin with swine as the target species. Similar systematic research is needed in other meat-producing species. At present, neither technology is approved for use; however, beyond support of product registration, such research has, and will continue to, significantly advance knowledge on the control and manipulation of animal growth. As technologies awaiting application in production agriculture, consumer education and acceptance are the major, non-scientific, issue which will determine probable success or failure and possible shape future commercialization interest to develop products for livestock agriculture.
