The geographical information system of soils (PUGIS) is being developed. This paper concentrates in detail only on the analytical and descriptive pedon database. The special software for data digitalization was developed, which is based on user defined hypertext. The developed software makes it possible for user to have a dynamic and flexible access to the digitized data. The list of data and of the methods of its acquisition available in PUGIS is described in details. The described software was tested by digitizing of a large set of data on special soil pits, collected during the systematic soil survey of the Czech Republic (historical data) and on the actual data collected on selected soil pits recently. The system proved to be fully suitable for that purpose and for introduction of digitized soil data into GIS (ARCINFO).
