The agriculture sector in Latvia can be characterized by a low level of mechanization and large number of small production units, leading to a large cost burden, and small revenues from agricultural production. Although a semi-subsistence farm still is not formally defined, it is obvious that the maintenance of their commercial viability is of high importance. Recently EU rural development programs for candidate countries have been complemented by a specific measure for semi-subsistence farms - 1000 euros per year per farm for the period of five years. Candidate countries applying for the measure are allowed to set definition and size limits of the semi-subsistence farm in the context of their country.
