Axial-flow rice thresher utilization by farmers in Sainoi, Nonthaburi, Thailand.
1989
Chumjai P.
Findings showed that most of Sainoi farmers were males with a mean age of 42.6 years. All of them planted two croppings a year. They earned an average annual income of 124,102.88 bahts. The farmers' perception of local transportation and marketing were "unfavorable". Source of information about the AFT [axial-flow thresher] was perceived to have "low credibility". Overall characteristics of the AFT were perceived as neither "favorable" nor "unfavorable". The great majority of the farmers utilized AFT. The main reason for not using the thresher was the unavailability/shortage of the AFT. Ownership of AFT is quite low because of its high price. The Kendall's coefficient analysis and Mc Nemar test of significance revealed that number of family members working on the farm, farm size, and farmers' perception of local transportation, marketing, and characteristics of personal sources of information on AFT were found to be negatively related to the AFT utilization. Only tenure status and farmers' perception of characteristics of AFT were positively related to AFT utilization. Lastly, there was no significant difference in the use of the thresher by cropping season.
