Evaluacion de variedades y conservacion post-cosecha de reinas luisas (Callistephus chinensis Nees) cultivadas en Valdivia.

A trial was carried out, to evaluate the vegetative and floral characteristics of the China asters Callistephus chinensis Nees, under dry barren land conditions, and also to see its adaptation under Valdivia, Chile, conditions. Besides, different post-harvest conservation tests were carried out using preserving solutions which contained different sugar and hydroxiquinoline concentrations; besides, a test was done in which silver nitrate was used; the purpose of this trial was to evaluate the cut flowers duration when using preserving solutions versus a check with pure water. In the dry barren land conditions in which this test was carried out, only the varieties Flamir Rose vig, Perfektion Dunkelrosa and Perfektion Karminrot reached a growth that makes them proper to be cultivated as flowers to be cut; for this reason it was suggested that the cultivation of Callistephus chinensis Nees, as flower to be cut, would be recommendable only under watered conditions. The yield in seeds production was not affected by the dry barren land conditions, and the results obtained vary within the ranks obtained by other authors. As far as the use of the preserving solution is concerned, these demonstrated to lengthen the survival average time, finding that in general the optimum concentrations of hydroxiquinoline are inverse to the optimum sugar concentrations and that the rank of 100 to 200 ppm of HQ together with a rank of 0.5 to 2% of sugar are those which presented best results in lengthening the flowers duration. No clear relations between the survival average time and the average weight loss per flower was appreciated and the water consumption was in general highest for the flowers that had a longer survival average time. The pH behavior of the preserving solutions was similar in the three tests tending to be lower as the time elapsed.
