A survey was conducted in the Muda rice growing area to determine yield loss due to lodging in rice and its subsequent effect on milling and quality of rice. Yield loss which was due to lodging was found to be as high as 59.8 percent with an average of 14.6 percent. However, there were also samples with higher yields in the lodged plants than in the unlodged plants. This is probably due to lodging which occurred very late (after ripening stage) and in the dry condition. Agronomic characteristics which were closely related to lodging were high sterility, increased culm height and heavy panicle weight. In terms of quality and milling, percentage of headrice and rice grain length were most affected. Fields for further research recommended were production of lodging resistant variety, development of effective screening technique and fertilization taking into consideration the importance of micronutrients.
