We evaluated the effect of drought preconditioning on the morphology and performance of P. lentiscus L., J. oxycedrus L. and Q. coccifera L. seedlings. We measured morphological attributes and root growth potential of two-years-old seedlings subjected to five cycles of drought, and measured the survival and growth of outplanted seedling. We found no effect of seedling preconditioning on P. lentiscus morphology. Q. coccifera responded to preconditioning by reducing aboveground and belowground biomass. Preconditioning did not affect aboveground traits in J. oxycedrus but it promoted an increase in root length, a decrease in mean root diameter and overall trend towards herringbone-type root architecture. Root growth potential decreased in preconditioned seedlings, but apparently this was not associated to the physiological status of the seedlings, nor to their performance in the field.
