The effects of photoperiod on the reproductive development, photosynthesis, chlorophyll content and extractability, assimilate distribution, protein synthesis, and hormone activity have been studied in three potato species (Solanum tuberosum; Solanum andigenum Lech.; Solanum stoloniferum Schlechtd. et Bouche) differing in photoperiodic requirements for flowering and tuberization. It is concluded that photoperiodic control of the vegetative and seed reproduction in potato is species and cultivar specific. There is no marked competition for assimilates between fruiting and tuberization processes. Assimilate distribution in certain potato species is controlled by photoperiod.
