A one-year study has been done on the effect of crop density on some biological and agronomical characteristics of sunflowers. Not one of the tested variants of crop density had a significant effect on the time of the appearance of certain phenophases, on the number of leaves on the plant and on seed coats. Density has a strong effect on plant height and seed yield. Crop density effects the absolute seed weight, its weight in hectoliters and its oiliness. The size of the sunflower head is in negative correlation with crop density increases. On the basis of the obtained results, it is concluded that, under the given test conditions (Ovce polje in SR Macedonia, Yugoslavia), the optimum sunflower crop density is 47619 plants per ha with a row arrangement of 70x30.
