During the 1983-1986 period, 15 cabbage and 18 cauliflower cultivars have been studied under high and low plastic tunnels. In 1984 the highest extra-early yields (by May 20) have been obtained from the Early cultivars of Vidra (55.7 t/ha) and Dittmark of East Germany (47.3 t/ha). In 1985 the highest extra-early yields under high plastic tunnels have been obtained from the cultivars: Early of Vidra, Darkry and Derby Day (39.8, 36.2 and 35.9 t/ha, respectively). Under low plastic tunnels high yields have been obtained by the same cultivars, as well as by the Dutch hybrid Vela. In 1983 the extra-early yields obtained were of 33.7 t/ha from Early of Vidra, 31.2 t/ha from Vela F1, 29.6 t/ha from Dittmark - East Germany. During the experimental period the best cauliflower cutivars under high plastic tunnels were Line 13/A and Fortados, with extra-early yields of 28.2 and 25.3 t/ha and total yields of 29 and 28.3 t/ha, respectively. Under low plastic tunnels the highest extra-early (14.9 t/ha) and total (17.2 t/ha) yields have been obtained from Fortados cultivar. In 1985 Hormade and Torina late cultivars gave total yields of 24.3 and 22.2 t/ha but, as they have been harvested at the beginning of June, it is considered that they are not suited for protected crops.
