The tropical, subtropical and temperate species were encountered in varying altitudinal zones of Doi Chiangdao. The barren peaks and ridges abound with temperate species of the holarctic elements (e.g. Cotoneaster, Delphinium and Thalictrum). Some mark their southernmost distributions on Doi Chiangdao (e.g. Clarkella nana, Cotoneaster franchetii and Inula rubicaulis). some were endemic species on this mountain and the typical plants of alpine vegetation (e.g. Geranium lamberti subsp. siamensis Primula siamensis and Saxifraga gemmipara var. siamensis). The conversions of the hill evergreen forest at the elevations of about 1,200-1,900 m into opium fields illegally practised by hilltribes in recent decades had drastically resulted gully erosions according to the steepness in the topography of this mountain. The annual burnings in the dry season had been disastrous to the existence and dispersal of these temperate species. The changing flora and vegetation type on the summits and ridges of Doi Chiangdao will be likely in the near future due to the increasing number of indisciplined hikers.
