A team of farming systems practitioners from Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) in collaboration with Rural Agricultural Foundation (Grameen Krishi Foundation - GKF) was engaged in on-farm generation and dissemination of technologies. The GKF is an NGO in northern sub-optimal environment in Bangladesh. Participatory approach was practiced in dealing with farmers and the NGO staff. The widely used practices of free inputs and full outputs of farmers were modified by an agreed system sharing both inputs and outputs between GKF and farmers. Production inputs except labour were supplied by GKF, while field operations were of farmers' responsibility. The BARI's system research scientists provided technical guidance. Forty crops and sixty varieties were tested along with cropping patterns, intercrops and homestead production systems. The involvement of farmers was increased and their level of participation was intensified. The command area, number of crops/technologies, cropping intensity, crop yield and return per unit investment increased significantly. Sustainable production practices resulted from the study.
