In pyrolizing filter cake from cane sugar factory working with sulfitation process, to get gas, liquid, and solid fuels, the gas produced smelled very badly and contained a lot of hydrogen sulfide. To overcome this draw back, the hydrogen sulfide should be absorbed with alkali solution and oxidized with air to obtain sulfate compound. This research was stressed on the oxidation of hydrogen sulfide with air in ash extract. The hydrogen sulfide gas used as raw material, was prepared by pirolizing Jatiroto cane sugar factory filter cake batchwise in a cylindrical steel retort, provided with kerosene burner, cyclone, separator, and cooler. After being analyzed, the hydrogen sulfide gas, collected in a 45 liters bottle was introduced into the oxidation column filled with ash extract. At the same time air was also bubbled into the packed oxidation column reactor. Samples were taken at 10 minutes intervals to determine their sulfate content. After steady state condition was reached, the sulfide content was also analyzed. Based on the results obtained when air velocity and temperature were varied, the rate of reaction was controlled by chemical reaction step, and the reaction was first order with respect to sulfide concentration. Within the range of variables studied, the effect of temperature on the rate constant followed Arrhenius equation, while the mole ratio of potassium to hydrogen sulfide affected the reaction rate constant logaritmically.
