Plant biotechnology immobilization and permeation procedures and research are reviewed using cultured plant cells. Plant tissue culture has been used to produce a large variety of secondary metabolites useful to the food industry, and the recent development of continuous biocatalytic processes can enable the economic production of such plant metabolites. Specific attention is given to the immobilization of cultured plant cells (cell viability and stability; immobilization of plant protoplasts; immobilized plant cell reactors), and to the permeability of immobilized cells to isolate desired metabolites. Experimental data and applications are included. Process flow diagrams are illustrated and discussed. (wz).
