Kashala K. | Compere R.
The authors present the results pertaining to the introduction of the French Limousin breed and the first crossing with the local Zebu on the Marungu plateau located in Shaba (Zaire) between 7 degree and 8 degree latitude south at more than 2,000 m in altitude. Over the past 35 years, the pure-bred Limousin which has adapted to its new climatic environment by a reduction in body growth and maturity, has nevertheless ensured a greater meat production than the Zebu under similar breeding conditions. Constraints to performance can be attributed to the poor quality of the natural pastures improved with Pennisetum clandestinum Hochst. ex Chiov. Results obtained with the crossbreds are intermediate between both parent breeds often with an important heterosis especially regarding fertility. Rearing the pure-bred Limousin is not feasible due to the risk of contracting trypanosomiase during the long walk to the slaughter house in Lubumbashi, so the ranch uses alternatively Limousin and Zebu bulls in its herds to conserve the advantages of crossbreeding.
