A survey of storage insects in 1975, on samples of rice taken from BULOG warehouses in Indramayu, Cirebon, Bogor and Bandung, showed the following insects in their order of abundance: Cryptolestes pusillus (Schon.) (flat grain beetle); Tribolium castaneum (Hbst.) (flour beetle); Sitophilus oryzae (L.) (rice weevil); Oryzaephilus surinamensis (L.) (saw-tooth grain beetle); Rhizopertha dominica (F.) (lesser grain borer), and Carpophilus dimidiatus (F.) (corn-sap beetle). Detia GAS-EX-B', a fumigant, composed of 57 percent aluminium phosphide and 43 percent inert ingredients, was evaluated for effectiveness against S. oryzae in BULOG warehouses. Effective control was obtained for all the insect stages using 1 sachet for 6 tons of piled rice through a 2-day period at 25-31 degree Celsius 75-90 percent relative humidity (RH). The effects of methyl bromide and phosphine on the viability of seed and insect mortality were studied. Methyl bromide at 32 g/m3 for 1,2 and 3 hours did not affect the viability of maize and rice seed: nor did phosphine (on rice seed) at 1.5 g/m3 for 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours. Both fumigants, at the dosages cited, controlled all the stages of S. oryzae effectively.
