Of the 23 weed species inoculated with spores of Phakopsora pachyrhizi, four species showed positive reactions. These were Calapogonium sp., Centrosema sp., Crotalaria sp., and Desmodium sp. Uredosori started to appear 7 days after inoculation and examination under a light microscope showed numerous uredospores in one sorus. The importance of longer latent period or slow rusting resistance was investigated. The resistant genotypes, UPLSy6, IPB Sy8352-10 and UPLSy4 exhibited significantly longer latent period than the susceptible cultivar, TK5. Relative to TK 5, there were 33 and 22 percent delay in latent period in resistant and moderately resistant genotypes, respectively. UPLSy6, a rust resistant soybean variety, had the smallest stomatal length (0.63 micron) and width (0.11 micron) and the highest trichome number (ave. of 82.11) while TK 5 had an average trichome number of 55. It seemed like resistance of UPLSy6 to soybean rust could be attributed to small stomatal aperture and a high number of thrichomes.
