There is the potential to introduce into Australia over 100 promising varieties, rootstocks or unnamed selections of deciduous fruits, not all of which are patented. This number exceeds the quarantine and processing capability of Australian States during 1984-85, therefore introduction over several years is necessary. Plant improvement schemes, planting systems, variety protection, nursery practice and the vertical axis training system are also discussed.
