The work of the Genetic Resources Program of ICARDA in 1989 is reported. A total of 1488 adapted new entries, indicating a considerable exploration of indigenous germplasm adapted to WANA region agricultural conditions, were collected from un- or underexplored regions of WANA or related environments. A total of 1676 cereals, 658 food legume, and 585 forage germplasm accessions were received from other institutions. The GRU provided 16535 samples to breeders at ICARDA, To NARSs, and other users worldwide. Six trainees from WANA region received training in genetic resources work. GRU established consultations with IBPGR to avoid overlapping and duplication of activities in ICARDA mandated crops. In addition, joint IBPGR and GRU activities were agreed on research, germplasm collecting and exploration, training and networking. High priority was given to the collaboration with NARSs especially in germplasm collecting and training activities. The total number of outgoing shipments increased by 24 and the number of incoming consignments increased by 25 compared to the previous period. Basic studies on selected viruses were carried out.
