Nitrate contents in tubers of 18 potato cvltivars of different vegetation period were examined in 1992-94. Effect of nitrogen fertilization rate (0-200 kg/ha) on nitrate accumulation in tubers was also studied on 4 early and 4 late cvs. Nitrate content in tubers varied depending on the vegetation period. Early ripening cultivars showed a tendency to higher nitrate content (on average 258 mg/kg) while the late cvs. to much lower (on average 47 mg/kg). Nitrate content in tubers was considerably modified by weather conditions. Nitrogen fertilization significantly increased nitrate contents in tubers of all examined cultivars.
