Many developing countries have adopted new wheat production technologies to increase food supply, but the opportunities to further increase farmers' production and profits are still enormous. The authors examine the characteristics of wheat as a crop and as a food, exploring recent scientific findings on management and production of this cereal, and suggesting important research topics for the future. The authors also analyze specific constraints and potentials for wheat production in eight representative countries, proposing means to organize and to conduct effective national wheat programs. Forecasts on world foods, wheat production, and human population for the rest of this century are included. The book is intended for directors and leaders in developing countries and international organizations to provide them with essential information about ways to increase wheat production.
