The experiment was conducted at Cikeumeuh, Exp. Farm, Bogor from March to May 1991. The objectives of the experiment are 1. to evaluate the varieties for their young cob corn in terms of yield and agronomic characters, 2. to determine the suitable N fertilization rate of young cob corn for optimum growth and yield, and 3. to determine the effect of detasseling on yield and agronomic characters. The experiment was laid out in factorial arrangement in randomized complete block design with variety as the first factor (CP-I, BC 10 MS 13, BC 10 and Arjuna); N application as the second factor (90 and 180 kg N/ha) and as the third factor detasselling. The 16 combinations were repeated three times. The size of plot was 15 sqm (5m x 3m), and distance of planting 75 cm x 10 cm, one plant per hill. Plants from inner rows constituted the 7.5 s qm harvest plot (5m x 1.5 m) that were harvested for measuring yield and agronomic characters. The results showed that CP-I was found to have the best attributes as young cob corn (baby corn) variety because the percentage length and diameter of cob were the highest for export and canning quality even though the yield is not so high compared to Arjuna. The weight of young cob of each variety was 2.0; 1.9; 1.7 and 2.3 t/ha for CP-I; BC10 MS 13; BC 10 and Arjuna, respectively. Application of 180 kg N/ha resulted in longer, wider and more ears per plant. The weight of young cob by applying 180 and 90 kg N/ha was 2.2 and 1.7 t/ha, respectively. Increasing application of 1 kg urea/ha could increase the yield of young cob 2,6 kg/ha. Detasseling could increase the yield of young cob corn and number of ears per plant.
