The present investigation was carried out at Sids Agricultural Research Station Beni Suef, Egypt during the two growing seasons 1983 and 1984. The main objective of this research was to study the capability of six soybean varieties (Calland, Clark, Columbus, Crawford, Desoto and Cutler 71) to tolerate metribuzin, linuron and alachlor each at three rates. The second objective was to investigate the residual effects of the above herbicides on the succeeding winter crops, viz, wheat and faba bean. A strip plot design with four replications was used in both seasons. In the light of the results obtained from this study, it can be concluded that under high intensity of annual weeds, the use of more effective herbicides such as metribuzin is very important. To have a great effect on weed control. high doses of this herbicide is recommended. it is prcferable to use the variety "Cutler 71" under these condititions without any side effect. It was found also that variety "Crawford" is very sensitive to higher rates of herbicides, especially metribuzin, However, this variety outyielded "Cutler 71" variety under hand weeded or lower rates of herbicides. With regard to variety "Desoto", it was very tolerant to high concentrations of herbicides, but its use is restricted to lower seed yield production. Varieties herbicides and their interaction showed insignificant effects on the succeeding crops (grain yield of wheat and seed yield of faba bean).
