Eshete Dejen
There is a research program on the biology and management of fish stock of Lake Tana. The research program started in 1989/90 in the gulf of Bahr Dar. Since then fishery and biological data have been collected. The present paper tries to describe preliminary results population dynamic parameters and management advice recommended to prevent local over-exploitation. Preliminary result gave that the fishery resource would be exploitable with minimum mesh size of 8 cm gillnet without any detrimental effect on all species in the Lake. The Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY) is estimated about 35 kg/ha/yr for the Gulf of Bahr Dar. The annual catch in 993 was about 22 kg/ha. Therefore, the fishery is in a developing stage still having much room for expanding the fishing effort up to 3.6 X. similar studies were recommended in the Northern part of Lake Tana.
