An accumulation in seed grain, yield and yield component of soybean variety S.J. 4 were studied in two consecutive experiments conducted in the rainy and dry season of 1981. Four defoliation and depodding treatments such as 66 % defoliation, 100 % defoliation, 50 % depodding and control were applied to soybean at complete flowering stage. The result of the study indicated that the rate of seed dry matter accumulation decreased drastically when 100 percent of leaf area had been removed. Furthermore, yield and yield components particularly the number of pod/plant and seed size decreased as 100 percent defoliation was imposed. However, when leaf area had been removed up to 66 percent, the yield, yield components, and seed dry matter accumulation rate were not drastically decreased as they normally occurred in 100 percent defoliation treatment. Depodding did not affect yield, yield component and rate of seed dry matter significantly, indicating that soybean would compensate for the loss in pods by producing more pods after depodding was done. The effective filling period duration remained stable and was not effected by the defoliation and depodding treatments. The effective filling in S.J. 4 soybean was between 27-30 days. The result of the study indicated the strong positive relationship between seed yield, yield components and rate of seed dry weight accumulation. The positive correlation between total dry matter, yield and rate of dry matter accumulation in seed was obtained.
