In a field trial during 1986-1988, in the region of southwestern Slovakia, information was obtained about the direct and residual effect of soil water regime variants (without irrigation, irrigation in case of soil moisture decrease to 60 % of available water capacity and irrigation during critical phases of plant growth) and variants of nitrogen doses (100, 200 and 250 kg.ha** (-1) of nutrients (applied in the form of DAM 390 before sowing upon corn yields of maize grown in the 1st and 2nd season). Research results confirm the possibility of increase of maize corn yields by means of vegetation irrigation, in comparison to the non-irrigated variant by 33.8 % (the highest corn yield 12.42 t.ha** (-1) (in case of irrigation water consumption of 155 mm, and by subsequent effect of irrigation in the 2nd season of maize growing by 10.3-20.1 %) the highest corn yield 10.58 t.ha** (-1)). The direct effect of increasing nitrogen doses was presented by statistically nonconclusive decrease in yields and that of residual by 6.2 and 6.3 % increase.
