Changes in photosynthetic activity and the amount of some related foliar constituents in field-grown mulberry (Morus alba L.) leaves during development through senescence.

The investigation of the photosynthetic activity of individual leaves is essential for evaluating the dry matter production of the whole plant population. Such investigations, however, have hardly been carried out in mulberry plants grown in the field. In the present study, changes in the photosynthetic rates under saturated light conditions (Pmax) and content of foliar constituents related to photosynthesis were studied in mulberry leaves attached to the regenerated shoots of standard and densely planted trees, after old stems with leaves had been harvested from stumps in late May. Pmax value was determined by measuring the amount of O2 evolved from the irradiated leaf segment immersed in CO2-saturated buffer using a measuring pipette.
