Field experiments with inoculation and nitrogen fertilization of kidney beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.).
1991
Bengtsson A.
In experiments with kidney beans in 1988-1990, the effects of inoculation with Rhizobium leguminosarum biovar phaseoli and fertilization with nitrogen were tested at four places. On the island of Oeland, where beans are commonly grown, neither inoculation nor nitrogen fertilization significantly affected the seed yield or thousand-seed weight. However, nitrogen fertilization increased the protein content of the seeds and decreased the number of root nodules. In most experiments on three sites in the counties of Gotland and Skaane where beans had never been grown, inoculation and fertilization increased the seed yield, thousand-seed weight and protein content. The number of root nodules was strongly increased by inoculation.
