The effects of two types of synthetic detergents on growth of water hyacinth, Eichhornia crassipes (Mart.) Solms. were studied for 12 weeks period. Two concentrations of hard and soft detergents at the rate of 2.5 and 50 mg/l were used to study the growth of water hyacinth. The results indicated that water hyacinth under the influence of low concentration of hard and soft types of detergents had better growth than that of the control and those treated with higher concentration. The height, root length, fresh weight and dry weight of water hyacinth at low concentration were higher than that of the control but the total number of plants in each treatment were the same. Growth of water hyacinth at high concentration of detergents was inhibited, resulting in the stunted, abnormal growth and finally death.
