The research was undertaken to determine the allelopathic effects of Cinnamomum parthenoxylon (treatment Cp.), Hopea mengarawan (treatment Hm), H. odorata (treatment Ho), Hymenaea courbaril (treatment Hc), and Pinus merkusii (treatment Pm) on growth and nodulation of Crotalaria anagyroides and C. usaramoensis. The seedling of one-month old Crotalaria, planted in plastic bag containers filled by soil and sand (1 x 1), were treated by leave extracts of the above trees in five replications. The soil was collected from an area away from the trees. The extracts were prepared by pouring five liters boiling water over 500 grams fresh leaves and allowing the mixtures to stand for 24 hours. The treatments were applied twice, at the beginnings of the first and the fourth month of experiment period, each of 10 cc extract per seedling. After six months the seedling were evaluated for their stem height, number and dry weight of nodule; the height was also measured at the time of the first treatment applied. The results showed that both C. anagyroides and C. usaramoensis grew better under the effects of the Hc and Cp. Their growth was characterized by a few number of large nodules. It was therefore concluded that there was no significant effect of the two treatments on growth and nodulation of the Crotalaria. A significant effect was given by the Ho on C. anagyroides and the Pm on C. usaramoensis; the treatments made the nodules smaller in size and fewer in number than those formed in the control. Another interesting aspects expressed by the research are: a) contradictive response of the two Crotalaria to the Hm, Ho, and Pm, and b) better height growth supported either by few and small nodules or large and many nodules.
