Insect pests associated with oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) in Agusan del Sur [Philippines].
1994
Varela R.P.
Insect pests found in the oil palm ecosystem were identified and monitored in eight sampling stations from January 1989 to December 1991. There were 21 insect pest species recorded. Of these, only two species reached outbreak proportion, the Thosea sp. and Penthocrates sp. The population of these two pests varied depending on the topography, age of the palms, climatic conditions and vegetation present in the area. Higher populations were observed during rainy season. Flat to gently undulating topography was favorable for both pests. The population of Penthocrates sp. was low in areas dominated by Cleome ciliata. Other pest species were present but so far, no economic damage can be attributed to these pests.
