This paper deals with the organization of mechanization at Italian farms with regard to farm investment in machinery and mechanized services supplied by other enterprises. Interest in this subject in Italy is caused by need to explain the phenomenon of contracting certain on-farm operations to third parties. A scheme for classifying farms has been worked out on the basis of the characteristics of the stock of farm machines and of the extent to which external mechanised services are employed; the relevance of the scheme in explaining the phenomenon is then examined in quantitative terms. The main conclusions are that the organisation of the stock of farm machines depends on the opportunities to delegate productive activities to other enterprises; that, in its turn, is related to the environmental characteristics of the farm the type of farm labour available, the future prospects of the farm in terms of continuity, to the objectives followed in managing the farm; the type of production undertaken and the ccost for mechanised operations. This type of reorganisation of different productive operations between enterprises will continue in future both as a result of the progressive adoption of new technologies and changes in the social characteristics of those working in agriculture, and of the development of the Common Agricultural Policy which produces environmental and economic effects; both positive and negative.
