The mycological contamination and appearance of mycotoxin zearalenone in cattle fodder was examined. A total of 175 samples of individual fodder (hay, silage, concentrated fodder) and cattle feed from two cattle farms were examined in Serbia (Yugoslavia) from 1987 to 1989. The same genus of fungi was found in the examined cattle fodder samples as in fodder for any other domestic animals (Penicillium, Aspergillus, Alternaria, Phisopsu, Mucor). The degree of contamination in the feed for fattening calves was very high, over 250 kg and in hay - 37.1% and 50% samples with over 5 x 10 fungi spores in 1 g feed. There was established an increased contamination of lucerne hay and fodder for fattening calves up to 250 kg. Corn silage had a low contamination with fungi. The frequency of the appearance of zearalenone in the examined fodder varied from 20-50% samples (34.9% on the average). The highest percentage of positive samples (50%) was found in corn cobs from barns and hay. A high content of zearalenone - from 2.6-12.0 mg/kg - was found in 10 of the 155 examined samples (6.5%). The remaining positive samples (44%) contained from 0.2-2.5 mg/kg fodder mycotoxin zearalenone. The determined quantities of zearalenone incattle fodder might be harmful to these domestic animals under certain conditions.
