On grazing cattle in Germany the fly species Musca autumnalis, Hydrotaea irritans, H. albipuncta, Haematobia irritans and H. stimulans are the most abundant species. On horses M. autumnalis and Hydrotaea spec. are most prevalent, and on both domestic animals Haematopota italica and H. pluvialis are dominant. For control of flies the pyrethroids permethrin, cypermethrin and deltamethrin were used by handspraying giving a protection period of 21 days. Eartags containing permethrin, cypermethrin, fenvalerate or flucythrinate protected for 4-5 months, and with the pour on formulations of deltamethrin, cypermethrin, cyfluthrin and cyhalothrin resulted a good fly control for 30 days in cattle. In horses an emulsion containing permethrin and citronellol was used to control flies and tabanids for 14 and 6 days respectively. Cypermethrin impregnated strips were effective to control flies for 3 weeks.
