This paper describes the soil map of the Danube Delta Biosphere Reserve content. The legend of this map has a complex structure. Each soil mapping unit is characterized by the following attributes: - Soil: soil type and subtype, top soil (0-20 cm), texture, ripening status, salinity and sodicity, degree of organic matter decomposition and other soil properties. - Environment: relief (land form and nature), absolute altitude. - Head deposits: particle size and origin. - Drainage and inundability: in free regime, embanked. - Land use: natural status, agriculture, silviculture and pisciculture. Each soil mapping unit is labelled with a formula which includes all the above mentioned characteristics. The field survey scale is shown in fig. 1. The map is organized in 3168 polygons (delineations) and 1334 soil mapping units (fig. 2).
