Three experimental trials using 1,575 one-day-old commercial broiler chicks (C.P. 707) were conducted to determine the effects of plant protein ration supplemented with methionine or antibiotics in order to improve the nutritive value of ration compared to practical broiler ration. The results obtained from 0-4 weeks in Experiment I showed that the chick fed all plant protein ration supplemented with methionine 0.2 percent significantly gained more than the group receiving all plant protein ration alone. But this growth response was significantly less than the chick fed the control ration containing animal protein. Average weights of groups fed the ration supplemented with methionine 0.14 percent was less than the control. This serious problem became more pronounced when the protein level was decreased from 20 to 18 percent protein during the finishing period. Supplementing terramycin or zinc bacitracin in the finishing ration resulted significantly in growth and feed efficiency than the ration without antibiotics but at the same protein level. The low protein ration cannot be improved by the antibiotics to equal the high protein ration. The result was more pronounced when the dose decreased in half. In Experiment III the result indicated that supplementing antibiotic in the first four weeks in the ration containing plant and animal protein, about 2.5:1 gave better growth response than the ration composed of protein from plant, animal about 4:1. No significant difference was obtained between unsupplemented and supplemented antibiotic in the finishing ration. It is noted that the antibiotic exerted better on the starter ration (0-4 weeks) than on the finishing ration (4-8 weeks).
