According to a preliminary comparison of watermelon varieties resistant and susceptible to Fusarium oxysporum, there are significant differences between their HCHO content /which is an essential component of the resistance potential/, especially in the roots. Under the influence of non-lethal F. oxysporum infection, in the alarm phase considerable HCHO level was observed. The higher HCHO level observed in the phase of the formation of resistance may derive from normal reactions of re-methylization. These basic observations refer to the biotransformation reactions of HCHO being essential processes of plant resistance to diseases within the stress syndrome.
