To obtain the basic data on the properties of soil organic matter and soil fertility improvement, the composition and spectroscopical properties of humic substances and soil nitrogen characteristics etc. were analyzed on 18 representative soil series based on soil drainages situated at the same regions and derived from the same parent materials. The content of organic matter tended to increase in the poorly drained soils. Ether extractable materials including fats, waxes and oils, and water soluble poly-saccharides were higher in the "excessively well drained" and in the "poorly drained" soils, while the content of resins was comparatively low in the poorly drainage conditions.
