This study was carried out at Patila and Sompe, Wajo district in 1988, to identify the development of cropping and farmers' income of upland rice. Observations in 1982 showed that 1 340 ha of dry land, were planted with upland rice and in 1986 it has been dropped to 214 ha which means that the area grown to upland rice has been decreased to 526 percent. Land at Patila village previously has been planted by upland rice-peanut, now was being planted with peanut-peanut-corn. Similarly, in Sompe, upland rice-peanut has changed to tobacco-peanut+corn. The difference of these changing is in the same season, peanut at Patila replaced by tobacco. "Ase Manurung" variety was used for upland rice, Gajah and Macan varieties for Peanut and "Impa-impa" and Gading varieties of corn. Rainfed areas at Patila were planted with rice-peanut+corn where farmers earned Rp 705.000/ha at a ratio of 5.8, meanwhile, farmers at Sompe earned Rp 775.000/ha at the B/C ratio of 5.4. The upland rice areas at Sompe which has been replaced by tobacco earned Rp 950.000 which implemented new pattern, i.e. tobacco-peanut+corn at the B/C ratio 4.8.
