The experiment was conducted at Maros Experimental Farm of Maros Research Institute for Food Crops (MORIF) during the dry season from June to August 1989. The objective of the experiment was to study the performance of cowpea lines/variety (Vigna unguiculata (L) Walp). Thirteen lines/variety of cowpea were tested in this experiment, including all season as a check. The plot size was 2 m x 5 m. The two seeds/hill were sown with the spacing of 40 cm x 20 cm. Plants were fertilized by 30 kg N, 60 kg P2O5 and 60 kg K2O/ha. Randomized complete block design was used in this experiment with three replications. Grains yield, weight of 100 seeds, number of seeds/pod, pod length, number of pods/plant, plant height at harvest, maturity, dry matter weight, protein content, pod performance, seed color and pod borer incidence were observed. Results of this experiment showed that EG-2 and TVX 1836-19E lines produced high grain yield: 1.45 and 1.30 t/ha respectively, while grain yield all season as a check variety is only 0.77 t/ha. The assesment of crude protein showed that the protein content of these lines/variety were ranging from 20.6 to 24.3 %.
